New perspectives for long-term climate predictions Long-term climate variability in the Northern Hemisphere linked to solar variations

Are climate predictions over periods of several years reliable if weather forecast are still only possible for short periods of several days? Nevertheless there are options to predict the development of key parameters on such long time scales. A new study led by scientists at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel shows how the well-known 11-year cycle of solar activity affects the long-time development of dominant large-scale pressure systems in the Northern Hemisphere.

Mount Everest:   The "Highest Altitude"

<BODY>Almost everyone calls Mount Everest "the highest mountain in the world" and climbers from everywhere travel to Everest hoping to earn the distinction of climbing the "World's Highest".

What does "world's highest" really mean?

Mount Everest is called the world's highest mountain because it has the highest elevation above sea level. We could also say that it has the "highest altitude".

The peak of Mount Everest is 8,850 meters (29,035 feet) above sea level. No other mountain on Earth has a higher altitude. However, some mountains might be considered "taller" (with taller being "the total vertical distance between their base and their summit").  More Information

Oil Fields from Space at Night

The geographic distribution of drilling sites can be mapped from space using Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite data from the
Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite. These images were produced by NASA using data acquired in April and October 2012...More Information
